Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgery can significantly improve a woman’s quality of life by reducing pain, discomfort, and self-consciousness caused by overly large breasts.

About Breast Reduction

The weight from very large breasts can cause a variety of problems including back and neck pain, skin irritation and breathing difficulty. Breast reduction is usually performed to correct a medical problem and may be covered by health insurance. The procedure removes fat, tissue, and excess skin from the breast, making the breast smaller, lighter, and firmer. The nipple is also repositioned in proportion to the new breast size

It is recommended that the breast be fully developed before surgery is performed. However, if large breasts are causing serious problems, a breast reduction surgeon may recommend this procedure for younger patients. Patients should keep in mind that breast reduction surgery should be postponed for women planning to breast feed. Surgery takes about 3-5 hours under general anesthesia and recovery is about 7-10 days.

Breast reduction surgery involves the removal of excess breast tissue, skin, and fat, and repositioning the nipple to create a more proportionate and natural-looking breast shape.
Before the surgery, the patient is given general anesthesia to ensure that they are comfortable throughout the procedure. Once the patient is sedated, the surgeon will make incisions on the breasts in the shape of an anchor, around the areola and down to the crease below the breast. The excess breast tissue and fat are then removed through the incisions.
Once the breast tissue has been removed, the surgeon will reposition the nipple and areola to a higher position to achieve a more natural appearance. The skin is then pulled together, and the incisions are closed with stitches.
The procedure usually takes about two to four hours to complete, and patients typically stay overnight in the hospital for observation.

After your procedure the physicians at The Aesthetic Center for Plastic Surgery® may offer a visit to your home by a plastic surgery nurse, trained to assist in your recovery. For several weeks following surgery you will be wearing a support bra to reduce swelling and bruising.

After this time you will be able to select bras that enhance your new look. Most women can return to work in about two weeks but should avoid lifting or strenuous exercise for the next three to 4 weeks.

At ASPS we believe in providing our patients with personalized treatment plans that are designed specifically to meet their needs. Our goal is to help you achieve your desired breast reduction results as quickly as possible while maintaining the highest level of safety possible throughout the entire process. Frequently Asked Questions

Breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure that aims to remove excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to achieve a more proportionate and comfortable breast size. The surgeon typically makes an anchor-shaped incision around the areola, down the breast crease, and along the lower curve of the breast, and then reshapes and lifts the remaining tissue.

Breast reduction is ideal for women who have disproportionately large and heavy breasts that cause physical discomfort, such as back, neck, or shoulder pain, bra strap grooves, or skin irritation. Good candidates should be in good health, have realistic expectations, and have tried non-surgical methods, such as weight loss, physical therapy, or supportive garments, without success.
